Default fuel gauge always reads empty with the light on

i have a 96 jeep cherokee claasic 4.0 .i been having issues with the gauge always reading empty when its fill up.i recently did a circuit test and theres power on the female connector but i also notice the pinpoints on the fuel pump connector is the same.the fuel pump is brand new btw but its for a 97.could that be the problem

Pretty sure the 96 had a different fuel pump and it was only for that year. I am sure someone who knows for sure will chime in to verify.

Yep. The 1996 xj sending unit,pump,and regulator are all in one unit in the tank.

Is it possible to re wire the pinpoints to fit the connecter ?

Wiring:
1996:
1: Dark Green/Red = Fuel Pump Relay Output(+12V)
2: Black/Light Blue = Sensor Ground
3: Dark Blue = Fuel Level Sensor Signal
4: ----------
5: Dark Blue/White = Low Fuel Sense
6: Black = Ground

1997+:
1: Dark Green/White = Fuel Pump Relay Output
2: ---------
3: Dark Blue/Light Green = Fuel Level Sensor
4: Brown/Yellow = Sensor Ground
5: ---------
6: Black = Ground
