Default fuel gauge

I recently replaced the fuel pump in my '88 xj. A couple of days later while travreling over some bumpy "roads" the fuel gauge started going from 1/2 to way over full. Sometime when I start the jeep the gauge is right and sometimes it reads way past full. I have checked the punp install and cannot find anything wrong. Any ideas??

This is my first experience with an xj and I really use the forum an lot.

Thank you
Ray

Man the same thing happens to me, but worse. I took my xj on a bumpy road the other day, and ever since the fuel gauge has been doing what you say, but even going past the full mark!! And along with that the fuel pump will randomly shut off when the gauge goes on the fritz and stall my car!

Let me know how you fix your problem. I'm going to start by looking at the grounds, wiring, and relays, and then go ahead and get a new pump/ sending unit if I can't figure it out.

Good luck

So I fixed my problem! Just went to the u-pull, and got another pump/sending unit and put it in. I don't understand why everyone thinks the tank needs to be dropped, I installed it with the tank still in. this new pump looked a little different, but my gauge is working fine now, and my car hasn't stalled yet.
