Default fuel efficiency

Hey CF community,

I have a 96 xj 4.0 4x4 sitting on a small lift (not sure the size) and running 33's with the stock axles/ no slipyoke. I have a 5 speed trans and really am enjoying my jeep. I wanted to hear some advice on how to make my jeep a little more gas friendly.

First thing I was gonna do is upgrade my rear axle to a 8.8 that has the 4.10 and match that with a 4.10 d30 up front, this should make a little bit of a difference...right??? Is there any other axle I can consider that is strong and will better my mpg?

After this upgrade I want to see where I am at but am looking at doing a new fuel pump and injectors along with my 100,000 mile tune up (which I have recently done plugs, wires, K&n af, fuel filter, regular 5w-30 synthetic oil changes, and fuel injector service ... less than 10,000 miles ago). These things had a small effect on the mileage but makes my jeep run really nice.

Any tips or tricks you guys know of to squeeze a few extra mpg out of my jeep?

I think you mean a Dana 30 up front?

Gears would be the first thing you should do. Next thing would be exhaust. Check for cracks in your exhaust manifold and for a bad cat. Replacing the upstream o2 may make a bit of a difference. Also, clean the throttle body.

yes d30 haha my bad ... the front axle in a 4cyl 4x4 jeep xj haha. and the exhaust does have a leak but very small, how can that create bad gas mileage though?

It'll give the o2 sensor an improper reading of fuel/air ratio in the exhaust, telling it there is more air and therefore cause more fuel to be dumped in.
