so when trying to put on my hi country offroad shackles (over rated!!) i ended up breaking three of the four bolts that hole the sway bar up, tried to drill and us a bolt extractor and snapped the bolt extractor off inside the bolts, any ideas on how to get that crap out? is it really as bad as everyone says to drive without the front sway bar its not like im takin turns like they do on indy racing

 

since extractors are hardened steel it's impossible to drill them out. Use a small punch or chisel and a hammer to break it apart. And driving without the front sway bar wouldn't be a good idea in case you have to make a evasive maneuver to avoid a accident you could end up flipping it over which would really suck.

 

okay so once i get the extractor out then what? still leaves me with bolts that i need to get out so i can bolt the sway bar back up

 

You can drill them out and rethread them with a thread chaser I forgot what size they are.. maybe somebody else has that answer.

 

its a 10m got a tap and die set today actually just wondering if when i drill out the bolt if its gonna eff up the weld nut in the frame, there is an access hole i on the front of the unibody i think i might be able to fish a nut to the hole if need be but not sure

 

I've driven without either sway bar for the past year and a half, and it hasn't caused any problems at all. That includes highway speeds and the usual teenageresque driving.

 

yeah, I don't have any hooked up either, not that bad, just got to take it easy.

 

no sway bar is a bad idea and gets worse with lift. it isn't worth the risk. it doesn't feel bad or seem bad for a day or maybe a year but there will come that one evasive maneuver that does it in. way more expensive than drilling and re-threading. if it is your only way to work in the morn and you have to just be easy. as far as access to the holes to fish a bolt in i dont think so...and if there was prolly more work than the other anyway. Dont think you will mess up the welded nuts just dont over torque anything

 

Has anyone ever wrecked their Jeep specifically because of there being no sway bars? I'm not tryin to be an *****.. just curious.

Pretty much every forum I've been on, people have said it's very dangerous. However, I've been in many situations (i.e. evasive maneuvers at highway speeds, j-turns, etc etc) that these people would have deemed "negatively affected" by no sway bars, and the Jeep has satisfactorily made it through all of them. I have somewhat extensive law enforcement training in driving, but I don't think that makes a difference in all situations.

 

i don't think it is a common thing to have a catastrophe without a sway bar..but it is there for a purpose and just to stay on the safe side especially with a lift i wouldn't go without it too long....and your driving background probably helps a little .

 

punch out the weldnuts with a hammer and punch, fish in new nuts through the front access holes. had the same problem when installing my front mount hitch.

Swaybar disconnects are so easy to make the swaybar should never be removed unless the vehicle is strictly for offroad. In your case, you don't have to mount it in the exact same location. Just drill some new holes and get some new hardware, mount it an inch or two back or forward and leave the broken bolts in there.
