Default Front lights are not working

hello all
i was just heading back home and it is a dark night, i turned on the car and turned on the front lights, when i moved on the way they just turned off with no reason, i again turned on/off .. but they didnt work .. any help plz ? i opened the lights and the wires were hocked, nothing seemed to be un hooked, any ideas what might be the reason ?

and another thing plz, i was reading some other posts and i read about this on/off/on/off/on thing and then a code flashes or something, i did it and check engine light kept blinking, but i didnt see any code, where does that code appear ? i have a 1994 xj..
thanks again

So you don't have low OR high beams?

The CEL IS the code. Count how many times it flashes. 55 means no errors.

I think, that the reasons could be the fuses and the lamps.Just check it them first.

Mine did soething very similar. I could activate my brights is I pulled and held my shifter but that was it. It ended up being my Headlight Switch. its a simple switch IF that is it. the black plactic piece you see at the base of the headlight unscrews. if you take the front of the dash off and can find a way to get your hand up behind the switch there is a mettal button on the back. if you press it in and pull the headlight switch out, the front tab you pull totally releases. then the switch comes out. it wasnt complicated, just frustrating and bloody hands haha

[QUOTE=bobvalli;784143]So you don't have low OR high beams?

well i have the high beams, but it only works when i blink, if i keep my hand on the stick it is on, but i cant drive while holding it, it is abit hard..

a friend of mine faced this problem before with a cherokee 2001, then he checked the electrician and i dont remember what was wrong really but he mentioned something about a sensor or something am not sure..

and regarding to how many times the check engine will blink, i will count
thanks all for the replies
