Default Front end vibration with 4wd engaged

Hello all i was windering if i could get some help i am having a bad vibration / binding issue when i put my jeep in 4wd high or low it seems like it will go so far hit a spot either in the transfer case or the diff, and just catch and jump very bad. i would really like to have my 4wd working since it is the start of winter and was wondering if there are any ideas on what to look for or what it may be thats binding up?

hard to say whats going on here without more information. If it does it while turning it is normal. If it does it while driving straight down the road then it could be many things from a bad t-case or diff or maybe someone swapped axles at some point and the gearing doesnt match

Transfer case has an internal chain drive, it can wear snd stretch to the point of skipping teeth on the gears, seen it happen, change it before it damages the teeth of the gears, couple hundred bucks, can be changed with the transfer case in the jeep. Look thru your lube filler hole, the chain should be firm and taunt above the level of the hole, not be hanging limp across the hole.
Alternatively do you have a vac disconnect front axle?, the disconnect shift fork can get sticky or worn and your coupling can be slipping on and off.
Are your front outer axle universals in good order?
Are your front drive shaft universals in good order?
Beyond these items it can get more complicated, front differential, perhaps pinion bearing or more. Perhaps planitary gear set within the differential. Check the earlier items first as they are the most common culprits.

Yes the u joints are good, it is when going down the road straight and it worked last year when i engaged it i still need to pull of the front diff cover to make sure my seal didnt go bad i replaced my rear tc seal and replaced the atf3 with atf4. so im leaning towards the differential.

^^ x3. Check the chain to make sure it's tight. if it's not, get a new one quick if you plan on using 4wd.

i will check the tc chain when i can i do not have access to a garage and tools in the winter very easily. i live in an apt so all my tools are at my dads and his garage is so full of crap that even if i could get the XJ in there i would not be able to work on her. i am working at borrowing a heator from someone and going to a different garage and taking tools with me.

First, are you trying to drive on dry pavement in 4wd? Do you have a np231 or an np242 transfer case? Is this a speed related problem? Does this happen just when turning?
You need to ask your question with all the info you can. From the info you provided it sounds as if you are putting it into 4Hi or 4Lo on pavement.
