Front end rebuild this weekend - where should I start?
I am planning to complete a full front end rebuild this weekend.
my question is there a specific order that makes the process easier for disassembly and reassembly? Suggestions appreciated.
I will be replacing:
unit bearings
TRE, drag link, track bar, etc
ball joints
stabilizer end links
LCA (UCA will be done later as I do not have replacement bushings).
stabilizer bar bushings have been replaced last weekend.
IIWM I'd crack the axle nut first with tires on the ground to disassemble wheel bearings (I assume that's unit bearings?); then hubs first cause you may need to use the steering to help kick the hubs off (hope you've been spraying those hub bolts with PB!); then those 12-pt 13 mm bolts; bang out or leave the one bolt partially in to use the steering to knock out the hub; then everything except the LCAs; then old LCAs out and new in; then track bar; then everything else.
I *just* finished up my 99 front end rebuild this week. Finished up last night. I replaced all tie-rods (Even did the GC upgrade), panhard bar, ends, ball joints, links, sway bushings, shocks, springs, inner oil seals, and even did the Grand Cherokee LCA mod. It rides SOOOOOO much better now. Alignment scheduled at 1 today.
My vehicle has no rust, except one area on passenger floor board - very fortunate. To be honest, if it was a rust bucket, I would not be taking on this project.
I will look at the spring perches and other areas as the rebuild progresses. Thank you for the heads up.
My boys were successful in removing and replacing the hub unit today. Some supervision and stepping in for a bit of old man muscle, but they got it done.
