hey guys, I have a problem on my 1991 cherokee laredo thats driving me nuts. I just got this Jeep in december and have been slowly going through it to fix all the small issues, overall it runs good and it's in really nice shape for a '91. the problem is: under hard acceleration in 2wd, or 4wd I get a clunk on the drivers side that feels like the axle is shifting downward. I have noticed this clunk only happens when driving forward, and never in reverse. my 4wd seems to work great in all ranges, no problem.
I have been going through the front end as a matter of course as this jeep is 20 years old and to this point have replaced the front hubs, ball joints, tie rods, and have my new poly control arm bushings on order. any thoughts would be appreciated. BTW this jeep is not "full time" 4wd, meaning I have part time, full time, and 4low selection, don't remember which Jeep calls it command or selec trac

Hello,
Had the same problem, 1993 jeep cherokee sport 4.0HO.
I had been slowly replacing all the worn front end suspension components, tie rods, inner tie rod off pitman, track bar, shocks, ball joints upper and lower, brakes, rotors, upper control arms, lower control arm bushings. The front end felt new again. Then after several months it developed a clunk on the drivers side when reversing out of my driveway, and then again when put into drive and i hit the brakes. It was very concerning. I shook the front end down like 5 times, could not find a thing wrong. Then I had my wifey get into the drivers seat in my garage and I asked her to go forwards and backwards each time hitting the brakes. After about two minutes I found the problem. The new lower control arm arm on the left side had become loose, not enough torque. When the jeep was put into drive and then driven over a bump slowly, the arm shifter forward making a loud clunk. Same thing happened in reverse. The trick was to loosen the nut on the bolt, clean with brake cleaner, use permatex blue threadlocker and torque back down. After threadlocking the nut on the bolt and a retorque, the clunk went away.
