Front End
So I am going to be doing some work on the front end of my 96 XJ, vehicle is largely a daily driver, family camping/recreational trips with minor offroad like fire trails and construction sites.
Here’s the list of things I’ll be doing.
Items already purchased:
Will be replacing the shocks within the month.
Replaced the sway bar bushings and connector links last summer.
Two main questions:
Here’s the list of things I’ll be doing.
Items already purchased:
- New Coil Springs (OME 930’s)
- New Track bar (JKS 1” to 3.5” adjustable)
- New Tie Rod (Moog)
- All new tie rod ends (Moog)
- New Stabilizer (Moog)
- New upper and lower ball joints (Spicer)
Will be replacing the shocks within the month.
Replaced the sway bar bushings and connector links last summer.
Two main questions:
- I’m wondering if I should also go ahead and replace the control arm bushings as well? I’d like to replace the control arms all together since the stock seem so flimsy but it’s just not in the budget right now.
- Are there any other obvious things that I’m missing while I’ve got the front end all torn apart?

A 99 WJ has arms that are way stronger than the XJ arms, and they are less expensive than after market tubular arms. They are almost a bolt in part. The bushing sleeves have to be shortened by about 6 mm. www.rockauto.com has them for about 50 bucks each.

Awesome, didn't realize that. I'll look into it.

Get a master polyurethane bushing kit from Energy Suspension. It replaces your stabilizer bar bushings, link bushings, UCA and LCA bushings, the track bar bushing, some tie rod dust boots, and your leaf spring and shackle bushings. It costs about $130. I put a lot of them into my Jeep (still got to do UCAs and the track bar), and I noticed an immediate improvement in suspension response to steering and cornering. The body roll is much less than it used to be, especially in the rear. I don't know if the bushings will fit in the WJ control arms, but all you'd have to do is measure the inside diameter of the bushing holes in the control arms.

I love the red ones. They make a nice accent under the vehicle. I also put in Energy suspension's motor mounts and the Daystar transmission mount. The motor and trans mounts made an awesome improvement in throttle response and helps downshift response.

CORRECTION: The Hyperflex master kit DOES NOT include the sway bar bushings. Those are an extra $24 and you need to measure the diameter of your sway bar.
