^x2 on using u-bolts instead of those pos straps, have had to stop and repair more rigs on trail runs because their straps broke or they lost a bolt that caused them to lose a joint cap.

 

Good info, and thanks. It looks pretty clear that trail running puts more & different stresses on the retainer then DD driving. After doing the equivalent of around the world two or three times my main problem is probably that I don't lube the U-joint often enough. No issues.
