Default Front door check strap fix

In case anyone wanted to know. Easy way to fix the front door check strap:

Go to the junkyard and grab the rear door check straps and pins. Swap your front one with these. Grease them up good and your golden!

Probably been covered a million times but thought I would share!

I saw a write up for a fix for the pre-update XJ ('96) front door check strap.

The issue is the check strap is too short, leading to flex crack on upper hinge

The fix is to fit a post-update ('97 on), as it is longer

therefore a longer check strap seems a viable solution if the issue is also present in those later vehicles

One option would be to find a rear door check strap in good condition at the J/Y and swap in the longer tongue from your current front door check strap.

If you relieve some of the spring pressure you can pull the check strap apart. One half will be the roller and spring assembly and the other will be the tongue and bumper. I’ve had three check straps go bad: two were due to broken springs and one due to a bent roller pin. They seem to fail before the tongue part. Take the original (longer) front door part and build it into a new hinge. If that makes any sense...
