Ok, sorry didn't make sense before. Yes, they are free wheeling when not engaged, and the torque could be a factor in the noise in the front diff.

BOTTOM LINE

It doesn't matter wheather there is pressure or toque on the ring and pinion, both of them rotate on bearings, bearings need oil.
