im pretty sure that the front driveshaft always spins on the newer cherokees, the newer ones have a solid shaft from the wheel to the diff, the older cherokee from 84- to about the 95 have an actuator to lock up the front.

uh.

no.

it has simple pressed, non-rebuildable unit bearings as your hubs, with axleshafts on either side, an open differential (low pinion IIRC, unless it was 99 which became lp), and a driveshaft to the case.

with the 4x4 disengaged via the shifter handle, your front axle will remain engaged. you can jack up one side, and spin the wheel...the other wheel won't even attempt to spin, but the driveshaft will spin with the wheel.

that's the way it is, there isn't any way around it, without dumping over a thousand dollars into the axle.

well im about to chance the pinyon seaal because its leaking change all the fluids and do a general check over of thefront axle since i had to drive around for months in front weel drive because it kept chuckin drive shafts and i figure since i doubt it should be spinning like that thats prolly somthing i should fix too i mean i go routin all the time so i need my 4x4 to be in perfict workin order especially since the plaaci i do it at it is illegal to do it there so gotta play around then leave

yea
i want to fix my front axle do the u joints because knowin how loose those things are theres no way there is any pins left in them change out the fluid gasket the pinyon seal is leaking and i figure whyle im doing all that might as well see y the front end wont disengage if u spin one wheel tho other one will spin the other direction and the drive shaft always spins i figure theres no need to do all that work and leave 1 thing broken
