Anybody got any tips for replacing the inner oil seals in a Dana 30 standard front axle tubes fitted to my 95 4ltr Limited?
Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm considering fabricating a threaded bar with heavy steel disks machined to the diameter of the seal to draw it into the tube. A friend of mine advocates just whacking the things in but I'm wary of that due to the possible damage to the rubber sections.

Your way is better. In a rush .... I'll knock them in, but I much prefer to use the all thread and push them into place with steady pressure.

Pretty much what I figured. Once again I thank my father in law for leaving me his lathe when he died. I've lost count of how many times now it's got me out of trouble.
The O/D of the seal is 52mm, and I've got some billet alloy that is 55mm O/D. I'll turn 3.5mm off one end of it and part off a 10mm thick puck which I can centre drill and tap. If I use that with a bar on the outside to provide the leverage and some M10 studding I reckon it will do the trick.

Looking at the old seals they are of a different construction to the new ones being stepped with a shoulder indicating how far down the tube they lie. Has anyone ot a manual handy that states how far inside the tube, the seals should be pressed?

There is a shoulder inside the tube .... just press the seal until is seats against the shoulder.

Don't look into it much more than that.

Thanks Joe, once it finally stops raining here I'll have another look at it. I've got a customer's car in the workshop so I'm a slave to the weather gods
