Default Free Cherokee Needs Exhaust

Man these things multiply almost as fast as motorcycles.

Picked this up today, 1996 w/167K miles. Needs exhaust, transfer case work, floors need patching. Drove almost 200 miles home from Maine, runs great!

Did I mention it was free?

First order of business is the exhaust work. Where's the best place to get full exhaust components from the header back? I'll check out Crown, they are close by. Any other suggestions? I'll do the install as I can weld and have a lift.

Cheers

You knew it would happen! But hey, for free take. It just turns out it's in better shape than I expected. It'll be my winter car so my rust free CA car doesn't get destroyed by the road salt.

Got under it, looks like I only need a muffler. Gonna go buy a cheapie over at Auto Zone.

Next on the list is figuring out what's wrong with the front drive. PO said it made terrible noises when in 4wd. He seemed to think the problem resides in the TC, which he said has trans fluid in, BTW. Worth opening up the existing TC for or should I just find a used one?

I'd check the t-case fluid level and condition first. Takes aTF.
Look at the linkage while you're down there, along with engine and trans mounts.

I use the same fluid in my NP242 as I do in my trans. No bueno?

Thanks NewbJeep $40 Walker muffler and it now purrs like a mountain lion... though now I can hear it misfiring somewhat. I'll change the plugs, all fluids and fuel filter this week while I'm looking for a good used TC.

Cool. I'm also the proud owner of a free 89 XJ 4x4 that only had 78,xxx miles when I got it August 2015. The exhaust was fine when I got mine but my stupid cousin ruined that.

So I now have to tear down and get a new exhaust manifold gasket (planning in doing a write up). A few other things too. Starting tomorrow. Good luck.

New spark plugs seemed to have remedied the misfiring. All of them were a lot less snug than I would prefer, and the front two looked like the sparks and/or cylinders were running cool, gaps on these two looked tight though I didn't measure them.

Ball joints checked out so I'm hoping to get an inspection sticker tomorrow
