Default four wheel drive linkage

XJ just doesnt engage into 4x4, So i have read up on 4x4 issues and narrowed the fixes down to either then linkage or vac lines. Well thats all i got out of it was the possible fixes, i still dont know how to go about adjusting the linkage if it does need adjusting, is it as simple as just physically moving it with my hands or...thanks

Prolly let us know what year the XJ - type of transfer case (If you know) and do you have the lever on the floor next to the shifter? Other posibility is that you have the vac line that goes to the front axle to engage - that could be an issue too. More info please.

My linkage did the same thing. Was stuck in Part-Time Hi.

Pull the lever all the way back into 4x4 Lo, get under the vehicle and their is a bolt in the linkage that needs to be tightened. I loosened it a little and pulled the rod that it holds in place down some and then tightened it. It does't look like it changes, but it fixes the issues.
At least for me.
If it is the linkage that would be how to fix it. Took me like 5 minutes.

Hey guys lil update. the linkage was completely disconnected so i put it in 4lo and tried to shove it back together with a pair of pliers but couldnt get enough leverage to put it in all the way. needless to say i tried out the 4wd on a snowy parking lot and ran into some trouble, there is major grinding when i initially start and then when i try and turn...im talking bad grinding. could this just be the play of the linkage making it shift in and out of 4wd?
