Font and Rear Axil & 5 speed manual trans.
Hi!~it's been a while, but needed some info...1989 Jeep, Cherokee, Laredo, and 4.0 liter eng. and 5 speed manual trans.
For the front differencial I have on the tag...5300930,
3.07 610321-5
Dana
40860
3168
REV-D
3-1-88
The rear differencial...53003516
3.08 605323-1
42965
305.8
REV N
11-1-87
5 speed man. trans.
53005454

Are the front and rear differencials Dana and is the 3.07 and 3.06 the gear size?
Is the rear has posi-tractions or limited slip or what do they call it, now that I am almost 55 years old?
Couldn't even order the pinion seal for the rear without matching it at the parts store.
What kind of trans. is this?
My next question is what kind of transfer case is it or do you need the numbers?
The book I have doesn't even tell you what gear oil to put in them.
Well I put 85 -140 GL-5 in the rear and some additive in case it is limited slip. I pull a small trailer once in a while.
Lots of ??? jretzky Thanks!~if you reply....

I'm not an expert on the differentials but I recall reading that while the listed number varied they're considered the same on some model years. Hopefully someone can help with that. Front is going to be a Dana 30. Rear is either a Dana 44 or Dana 35. See below:

The rear axles were available with limited slip as an option. If the clutches haven't been replaced in the last 23 years, though, it probably isn't anymore!
I'm pretty certain that you'd have a Peugeot BA-10/5 and that the Aisin Warner AX-15 didn't start until a year or two later. Here they are, in that order:

If you've been underneath looking at tags you should recognize which one you have. The BA-10/5 kind of looks like a suitcase as the housing bolts together at the top and bottom. (also see http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ba10_5.htm) The AX-15 is beefier and features a "DO NOT REMOVE" plug on the passenger side (see http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ax15.htm)
Transfer case is easy - NP242 features Full Time 4WD, NP231 is Part-Time 4WD only.
Oil in the rear is fine. Just a small trailer you should be able to get away with 75W90 though. Front is 75W90 regardless. Either transmission is supposed to have 75W90 GL-3 gear oil in it, but this has been retired and superseded by GL-5. However, don't put GL-5 oil in! It has extra additives that are corrosive to brass synchronizers. If you can find a synchro-friendly oil, that's best. There are many threads about this topic, I recommend a search. Either model transfer case is Dexron (II/III)/Mercon ATF.
Also, search is your friend. Most of this stuff I just remembered what to look for and brought it up via searching.

Not sure about XJ's, but with YJ's they switched from the Puegot to AX in March of 89. Also, one way to identify them is how the cases split; BA 10 I'm pretty sure is front to rear and AX 15 is side to side.
As far as oil for the trans, I called Chrysler and they said to use 10w30.

Chrysler said that because they stopped stocking 75W90 API GL-3 and replaced the part number with 10W30 because it is a similar viscosity. Aisin-Warner designed and built the AX-15, not Chrysler - they're just a customer like New Venture Gear built the NP231 and Dana built the axles. The spec from the actual manufacturer is proper gear oil. Engine oil and gear oil are different things, and running something that isn't designed for gear pressure but rather sliding forces is detrimental to your transmission.
