I basically want mine to turn on with a switch. I dont want to use them all the time with low beams, but basically anytime I need them. Someone told me here in VA that to pass inspection your lights have to be wired to cut off with high beams... If mine is in a switch where I control it do I have to do this?

For that case you should add a duel source switch with lock. Check your laws but by specifically labeling "off road only" and "on road" might be enough to abide by your law and still have what you want.

What it will do is in "on road" position the lights will turn off with your high beams. In the "Off road only" position the switch controls them and they are not affected by the high beams.

Check this switch out...http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a...YSWITCH/1.html

You can lock and unlock it at will.

EDIT: added a new schematic

I think I am gonna wire it the way it came with just a switch. Worst comes to worst I have an uncle who owns a shop about 30 mins away and I know he wouldnt give me grief over it. The instructions seem pretty simple, a bunch of plug and go stuff. It tells me to disconnect the battery ground first.. i guess so I dont shock the sh** out of myself lol. It has a red line that goes to the switch with a fuse built into it. No relay. Should I get a relay?

how big are the lights? Over 50 watt I would recommend a relay.

12 volt automotive grade relay. That's about it.

They aren't all that expensive.

Awesome. I will pick one up tonight after work. Thanks for all the much needed help. Hopefully I can get these things set up well, plus your schematics will REALLY help. All I really need to do now is figure out where I wanna mount the switch. Thanks again.

Actually, disconnecting the battery is less about shocking danger, and more about shorting danger! Don't disconnect, and you could blow out something without realizing it, and then have months of headache trying to find it.
