FOB problem!!!! Help!!!!
this smilie says it all... i have a 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo. it has keyless entry but the stupid FOB doesn't want to work. I put brand new batteries but it still won't work. I was told by the previous owner that the FOB worked for him before. I don't know if there is a way to check it myself or try programming it myself. Or should I just take it to the dealership and see if they can check it? Any helpful suggestions are welcomed.

^ This programming works for my 1996 XJ with the Infra-red FOB. Programming also found in the owners manual.
If yours uses radio frequency than the procedure may be different.

Will this work on a 2000? Just got my XJ running, and the PO,said that the fOB worked, but the button to unlock was missing from the cover. While waiting on engine parts, I found a new cover, replaced the old, and found no battery. Bought a new battery, got the engine running, and the FOB isn't working. Thanks....RR

1996 was a change-over year for the Grand Cherokee. Early production used the Infra-Red system (same as XJ). The RKE, remote keyless entry uses a two button remote (fob). The above posted instructions will only work on this type.
Later in 1996 the system was switched to RF Radio Frequency, and uses mostly a three button remote with or without alarm. Some have a 'panic' button.
Top of picture is the one and only, early '96 infra-red. Easy to program..
Bottom row are all compatible with the RF system and I do not think they can be manually programmed. Dealer or locksmith.
The owners manual will have the details of your system, if you still have it.

Someone here has to have a manual. Mine is for 1996. We need someone with a 97-01 manual to look it up and report back.

When I bought my 99 XJ, it had only 1 fob. It worked sometimes, sometimes not. Replaced the batteries and it was much better; the lock works all the time, but the unlock only every once in a while. Now unlock does not work at all. Looked at some of these on eBay as suggested, and self-programming says you need to have one working remote; does one that the unlock is not fuctioning classify as working (I'm thinking not)? How much does a dealer charge to program, and would they do it if I walk in with one, or only if I buy it there?
I also noticed that my 2000 XJ fob did not have much range (~ 30 feet).
Thanks,

For all of you that are having issues with batteries dying quickly, just take apart the FOB and clean the electrical contact cleaners with some electrical cleaner and make sure all of the connections are clean. Was having same problem with batteries dying quickly with my 99 sport and this solved the issue. Good luck

found this in the 2000 cherokee FSM, so I guess take it to the dealership.
