I've got a Flowmaster 40 on my 90 Ranger with a 2.3 liter motor. Its plenty loud.

Last year I put a Cherry Bomb Turbo Muffler (NOT the glasspack), under my daughter's 90 XJ. Its not too loud and has a decent tone. Last month we put one under my friend's TJ, and a couple weeks ago I put one under my ZJ. I really like the sound to be honest... And at $22 from AutoZone, not expensive either.

I've got a 40 series on mine. No tailpipe for about 2 days, thought I was going to have to take it back off because it is my DD. I have about 60 miles round trip mostly highway to work and back. Put a tail pipe on it, and it's perfect. Not too loud, you can have a conversation, but you can tell it's not stock.

sounds like not the right choice if I want to reduce the amount of noise more than stock does.

I don't have any personal experience with a flowmaster 40, but I can suggest that you take a look at the Thrush Welded Muffler, it's about 30-40 bucks and from what i understand it is designed almost exactly like a 40 series flowmaster. I know there are some guys on here that have them and love them, and it saves you some $$$ over the flomaster. I run a Dynomax UltraFlo on my jeep, it wasn't the cheapest option, but I love the way it sounds...

My Flowmaster Super 40 is not that loud in the cab at all, I think it makes a perfect DD muffler. Check my sig for vids.
