Default Fixing the AC in a 87?

Well it's getting that time here in California. I have an 87 laredo and i done the r134 conversion and put the bottle of 134 in that it came with and it Barely worked. I don't even know if there is a difference!
So i would like suggestions before i waste money.
What route should i go about this?

Has anyone here gotten their older xj's ac to work again? and what did you do?
Should i just buy that sealant stuff and a bottle of 134?
I read the HVAC write up already. I am just asking for suggestions.

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/ret...12-134a-14996/ Follow the steps.Use pag oil with dye already mixed in it. No syn oil. And you may have to replace the reciever dryer.

did you do a suck down before you added 134A? Any air in the system will make it blow (Not so cold air) Step 1 do a deep vac. like 1 hour and then add the pag oil. Then add the proper amount of 134a. Going by the age of your vehicle I would replace the reciever dryer first. it might be soaked with moisture which is a A/c systems worst enemy.

do i have to take the dash out to replace that? This is my daily driver and can have little to no down time.
Hope i am not being a hassle for you.
What exactly is it that i need to do the "suck down"?

I have an 87 and did the 134a conversion, and it works, the receiver/drier is the black beer can sized cylinder below the back of the compressor.

Evacuate system (have it done at a shop, they recycle residual freon and dispose of it properly). Have drier/accumulator replaced, to make sure, you won't contaminate your system. Replace orifice tube. Replace o-rings on compressor, they are different for R-134a. Have it charged by an A/C shop, they will add the proper amount of PAG oil (or Ester oil, for retrofits), and refrigerant. Not sure, if all that will fix it, I had to replace the entire compressor on a Chevy's R-12 A/C system.

Replace dryer and choke valve. The choke valve us the square alum box at the end of the hoses going inside, next to the heater lines on the firewall. Also replace all o-rings.

Hopefully and not like me, I had to repair the compressor, (change the front seal, not so hard to do, I did myself)and if your hoses look too cracked like mine, best to replace them than keep havingto change them one by one andrefillingthe system (Learn the hard way!!!)
