Question Fixed Window Removal

Hi all,

We're new to XJ's (own and have owned SJ's for years) and am looking to replace the fixed side window with a venting side window on this 2 door Cherk. Did they build the body around the window or something? I've looked for a locking bead or some clue as to how in the world these windows come out but can't for the life of me figure it out.

Any tips?

TIA

Steve

you may be better off with the fixed deal, my vent window is leaky.

When in doubt, break it out?? I'm just kidding.

If I am not mistaken there are two phillips head screws in the jab (windshild pillar) When you open the door and look down on the door.

And 1-2 bolts holding the lower portion of the movable window track.

Some models have one screw right at the base of the window inside an access hole.

Put movable glass completely down. Remove track felts (weatherstrip that lines the movable glass track.
Push bottom of track (inside door) forward while pulling the top of the track (vent window) back.

Sometimes they are in there pretty good.

May I make a suggestion. Leave your fixed glass. Almost all vent glass leaks and some have upper pivot failure. Not to mention premature latch failure.

Not a good upgrade IMHO.

this thread has me wanting to do just the opposite, I want to yank the leaky vent windows and put solid ones there now.

Also, from a security standpoint, the vent windows make an easy target for crooks to get into your truck.

Howler has it covered if it's the front door he's referencing.

However, since he mentioned locking bead i think he's talking about installing a vent window cargo area section. I had these on my 2door... actually still in garage too.

Anyway, you need to start in a corner and work out the gasket on both sides as you work around the seal... from inside. Without breaking the glass...

That's the one...the fixed glass in the cargo area. Someone suggested using WD40 to help ease the gasket out...sounds like a real pita to put back in too.

Kaiser, AMC or Chrysler...some things never change with Jeeps.

Thanks for the info!

I win!!

Yeah, work around the seal inside and out to loosen it up. Try to work in 2 small screwdrivers on each side of a corner and gently work the seal out in a corner... then just continue working it out as you work your way around.

Start on drivers side... since i have a spare window and vent if you should need it.

Ok enough vent window hater bashing we all have a real problem here.
for the life of me i cannot find a latch replacement kit anywhere!!! and i really don't want to have to go to the junk yard and get all new used glass and take apart my door just to replace a stupid latch!! any ideas?
