All,

I know there are numerous posts on this site on how to jump the speaker wires in the door boot, or rewrap wires due to short to ground in hinge area, but after taking my door apart and pulling the speaker out, I found a different problem!

It was the connector to the speaker itself! The connector comes off the speaker very easily. From there, you will see that two wires go to the connector. Each wire ends in it's own tiny, single connector and fits into the larger connector separately. One of the wire connectors was too loose for the blade of the speaker connector to make full contact, so I simply pinched it tight and it now makes full contact.

I wrapped everything up and put door back together, and zowie--real live sound in my door! Who'da thunk it?!

BTW, I did see the wires to the speaker are starting to show insulation wear, so I wrapped 'em good.

Also fixed my power windows tonight by bypassing the "window lock" switch! Piece of cake--now all four windows go up and down! Imagine that!

Thanks for the tip!!! both my fronts are inop so I'll start there as it seems like an easy fix.

Let me know if this fixed your speaker issue! I was able to carefully pop the door interior off without ruining the plastic fasteners--pry gently.

I'm having the same issue. I just lost connection to my driver's side door speaker. It was working with the door half open, but when I closed the door completely, the sound would cut off from that particular speaker. Now the speakers are not receiving any sound open or closed.

With this problem, does this "sound" like a wire has been cut or a loose wire?

I checked the wires in the black rubber casing coming through the door, and I saw no cut.

It sounds like the same problem I had....

One of the wires to the speaker was not connected well. You have two wires that go to a connector that attaches to the speaker. You have to disconnect the connector from the speaker, then remove the connector from the two wires. You will see that each wire has a metal clip that attaches within the connector--this was my problem. I simply pinched (with needle nose pliers) the clips a bit tighter, then reconnected them to the connector, then reconnected to the speaker. Problem fixed.

The fix is easy. Exposing the speaker back is the only time consuming part.

Same problem, I want to take off my door panel and check it out. How many screws held your door panel on? What did u use to pry the fasteners?

Good tips bud. But my Jeep was way weird. For the driver's door when I checked the boot and speaker, the cable was completely cut. So I had to basically rewire it. Only took like 5 minutes I guess. Just to let everybody know a good thing to remember if you ever try to rewire, remember which one is positive and negative. I connected it wrong and weird static occurred. Now for the passenger door, when I opened the door the speaker cut off completely but once I shut the door it came back on. So I just basically popped in the harness and used some zip tie to hold it lol.

 

I just pulled carefully and they popped right out. I did use a nylon pry stick a little (looks like a tongue depresser).

A flathead screwdriver will do the trick. If you need the plastic fasteners (they break really easily), hit up NAPA. They'll hook you up.

 

Once you have two of the tabs popped out, you can just slide your hand between panel and door until you hit another tab, then pull gently. It'll come out without breaking.

 

UPDATE: The wire was completely disconnected. I had to connect the brown wire to the green in the black boot between the door. Thank god now for both speakers.

 

Same with my 2000. At first I thought it was a broken wire in the harness that go's into the door. But to be safe and get a better look I popped off the inside of the door panel and there it was -A LOOSE CONNECTION at the speaker. I read a thread about a month back that found this was the case in alot of Jeep XJs.

Its all fixed and now I have stereo..LOL

 

They make a "V" shaped type of scraper that lets you get behind the panel and locks up against the plastic lock--then you just gently pop/pry it as it spreads the pressure along the panel keeping it from breaking. Mind U some of the plastic pins will breakout from the cheap azz panel but you can get new ones. They ( the tool) are cheap and most auto stores have em or U can make one.
