Spray on lithium grease works great for this. Once a year and you're good to go...

The popping comes from the pin snapping back and forth in the bracket, not from the spring latch itself.

Use a small hammer and tap the pin out from the bottom up on both driver side doors.
Then remove the 2x 10mm bolts and swap the bracket front to rear
Reinstall pin and tap into place.

Now your driver's door doesn't pop. the drawback is now the rear door does. lol
That's what i did.

.....or you can easily find on at your JY, didn't matter which side tho.

yep, good call. I got pins, it helped a little, got new check pin brackets, helped some more. Now those parts are great but I can hear the check pin assembly inside the door popping, so next paycheck I'm gonna spring for 2 of those from ebay or the dealer.

folllow up: bought 2 door check assemblies and new pins from rockauto (Dorman parts) and new brackets on ebay, installed both front doors today and that popping noise is finally gone. Been waiting a while to have the time to get this done, so glad I did. I will say it was tricky to stick my hand up the speaker holes and get the new door check assemblies to go in their holes and out of the slot in the door, working in the rain didnt help either.

The door staying open isn't the big problem. The big problem is if it swings too wide and gets stopped by the hinges, you put major stress on the hinges. Keep that up and you can break the hinges themselves, or the door post itself where the hinges mount, and then you have a major repair on your hands.

Don't leave it like that!

I don't know how you managed to get the door check assembly to go through the slot but when I did this I fished a string through the slot and out the speaker hole, tied it around the hole in the end of the check assembly and pulled it up and through that slot. Just thought I would save some other people some time by sharing my method since I spent a good 15 minutes fiddling around with it inside the door trying to get it through the slot. Using the string took less than a minute.

That was my problem.
My fix was to drill out the bolt holes to the next 1/16" OD...I can't remember the size...and then replaced the pin with the same diameter Grade 8 bolt and a lock nut (put on loosely to keep the bolt from falling out).
If I remember correctly, it was a 5/16" diameter.

If you drill the holes, use the same diameter drill as the bolt size.
Example, If you use a 5/16" bolt, use a 5/16" diameter drill bit.
This will give a snug fit on the bolt and reduce the "popping" sound.
And..yes... a 5/16" bolt will go into a 5/16" drilled hole.

Ok so my front doors on my 00 XJ make a popping sound, when opening and closing. Same as what y'all are talking about. I started off by replacing the pins in both front doors, this did nothing to fix the noise. Next I ordered two door checks and replaced them. This did nothing for the noise. Not really sure what to do next to get rid of this annoying *** noise? After reading this thread it sounds like after everyone has replaced the pin and the door check, the noise has been fixed. I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Did you try beaning it well with lithium grease? (available at mall wart in an aresol can). Me thinks the "ggrruunncchh" noise is not lubed metal.

Did you replace the bracket when you replaced the door check? If not, that's probably your problem. The hole has gotten too big and out of shape.

Bleh. The door noose adds character. I enjoy the looks people give when getting in/out at a parking lot. Hah

Cole by the bracket do you mean the part that's connected to the body?

The army's 40th try at making a Water Displacement product, really isn't a very good lubricant. WD-40. My dad once said you might as well **** on it!
