I personally avoid 99-01 like the plague...
If its EARLY 99, WITHOUT the 0331 head it wouldnt be too bad for 4500 or less.
And thats if it has absolutely no rust...

welcome sonofthunder. If you were wondering "what the heck is 89Laredo talking about?" looky here:

I have a 2000 XJ, bought it for $2500. It needed alot of work though!
I do check my coolant weekly as coolant loss is the first symptom of the 0331 cylinder head cracking.
Would I buy another XJ with a 0331 head? Yes! if the price and condition warranted the potential cost of replacing the head if it was to crack. I could replace the head myself so I belive I could install a Tupy head for $600-700.
The cherokee you linked to has the Command-Trac and that transfer case can only be used on slippery surfaces. You may be happier with the Select-Trac if this Jeep is to be used mostly on road. Look at this link for a comparision of transfer cases:

Offer $4,250, see what he says. Offer with cash in hand and do the deal on the spot and ask for a 6-mo warranty. That is how to do it if you want the XJ. It looks ok. The 1999 do not have the 0331 head issue, only the 2000 and 2001 with the distributorless ignition may have the issue.
Get under the Jepp and see if the floorboards are rusted through. That can be fixed, but is a pain.
FWIW I like the 1995-1996 XJs. Old style, but have aribags.

and its not "May" with 00-01, they ALL have 0331 heads unless theyve been changed.
Right.

I wrote "may have the issue", not "may have the 0331 head", which indeed they all do unless changed as you pointed out. "May" with a capital "M" is either the month of May or the first word of a sentence. My use of it was neither. The 2000 and 2001 heads are different than the 1999 and earlier since there is no distributor to mount. Those are the heads most suseptable to the casting flaw between cylinders 3 and 4. As for and 1999 XJs with the flaw, this is news to me, but I am open to constructive, corrections.
