First Jeep!!! A Project - Transmission and Brake Issues
Hey guys, I bought my first Jeep today, an 89 Laredo 4.0L with only 117k original miles! It is a second owner, just bought it from an older couple who've owned it since 95, and never even put it into 4x4. It's super clean, all stock with all the maintenance records and receipts. It's been in storage the past year, and was just taken out by the PO. I ended up getting it for $600, which I think is a steal, but there are some issues I need to fix, and I was hoping you guys could help me out.
The situation: Engine starts up fine, and it runs great. The transmission (aw4) is another story. When put into drive, it will engage, and you can drive, however, after about 2 minutes, it fades very quickly and then stops engaging entirely. If you then turn the engine off and wait a few minutes, It will work again for a few minutes before fading out again. It is full of fluid- the PO had it changed a week ago thinking that might be the issue, but there was no improvement. I only drove it a few hundred yards, but also noticed that the brake booster was cutting in and out. After some searching, it looks like the 89 ABS system is notoriously unreliable, and I may ditch it entirely. I know the AW4 is a great tranny, and it only has 117k on it, so I am hoping it is something relatively minor. I remember reading about the TPS sensor as a possible culprit for the aw4 cutting out. could that be the issue? Any advise on where to start would be great. Thanks guys, Ryan
