1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ SE 2 door, A/T, 4.0, I just rebuilt motor had a weird timing issue. I took the timing chain and gears off 3 times and put them back according to instructions even indexed the Distributor. Same procedure each time and on the 3rd attempt, it cranked immediately. NO F-ing idea. Aside from evil spirits.
BUT it won't restart after it has been running. Cranks but no start. Tested spark with test light and it would light up while cranking. I need to replace my fuel pressure gauge hose (lost the shrader valve insert. so I guess I will check that ASAP. IT was hitting 50 psi when cranking cold before I lost the insert. The CPS came off my other jeep XJ that had no issues, but I suppose it could be a thermal failure there??? I wrapped the exhaust manifold with that heat suppression wrap when I had it off so I don't think vapor lock is the problem, plus not sputtering, just no start when warmed up.
Wait: I have an idea. The jeep was overheated badly, then sold to me in parts. I used the old temp sensor. I just checked and the gauge no reading. when it was running it showed temp I swear even with the engine off key on. I'll change it in the morning, but I bet it is sending a code that is causing it.
Any reasonable suggestions appreciated.
Thank as always,
Sean

Temp sensor fixed it. Apparently it would work until shut off after getting up to temp then throw an overheating code to PCM. I guess it would trip the ASD. Works now.
