Default Fender flares on a 99

I absolutely think the fender flares are ugly on my 99. But I don;t want to spend the money on after market flares.
I am thinking about painting them flat black, or just leaving them off. Which would you do and why?

I do like the older flares a lot better.. Did you have to do some major cutting?

Nothing too major. Trimmed about 2.5 inches off my fenders. Kinda cut and measured as I went till I likes it. Then I measured where the mounting holes were so I could mount the other side and mark it so it came out the same.
