Have always taken apart what I've taken off/replaced. You really might not want to look at the pictures following. The only reason I replaced was the end tank on the passenger side was weeping at going into the "cold season" ( yeah I am a Georgia native. There really isn't much of a winter usually to be experienced.) My XJ usually ran straight up 12 o'clock unless I got caught in really stop n go traffic. Never had over-heated. And I recently ran flush for two days before draining.

My biggest WTF is the transmission "heat exchanger" which is what it must be called in the engineering room. You'll see why.

driver/fill tank side

pass/drain tank side

Is that RTV? You decide I will still keep doing everything to NOT use it.

yeah, I thought it ran the length of the radiator too. Just like the ones from
the 60's. But uhhh nope.

Time to plan for the transmission cooler. Cause that is not doing any transmission any good. Any that stupid Quick Disconnect at the radiator is PITA anyway and still leaks.

WOW, crap from a tree? Really?

How do you clean your cores out? I use a long engine oil dipstick from a Cat engine.

Nope, just a piece of RTV like I first suspected. But it does look exactly like one. Even super zooming the picture I still went out and dug it out of the scrap pile to check real quick!

So the trans cooler is just a tube going from top to bottom in one side?

To be fair I don't necessarily think they intended it to be a cooler. More like you said "heat exchanger" helps get the trams fluid up to temp quicker or maybe the coolant? (I don't know which would heat up first)

Which is why they had a trans cooler on the tow package I guess.

I always wondered why the trans lines connected to the radiator on the same side.

Was the antifreeze changed out biannually on this vehicle ??? Or did you use the "extended life" antifreeze in it ???
