Fan speed control is melted, 1997 XJ
I was getting a burning smell coming from my 1997's dash. I went in and discovered that the connector to the blower motor resistor was melted.
So, I replaced the resistor & blower motor in the same day. I also replaced the connector. I turn everything on and my air blows hard on 4. On 1 it blows about what it should. But on 2 & 3 it's very weak, weaker then 1.
I take a look behind the climate control & go figure the connector on the far left is melted, not severely but 1 of the pins is barely holding on, on both the connector & switch. Are there any write-ups for replacing the climate control in the newer XJs? I'm gonna need to find a new connector & i guess splice in the new wires. I couldn't find any using search. Mostly am not sure how to deal with the middle switch with all the wires going to it.

I don't know about the write ups, but you basically take the trim panels off and the control unit comes out and is replaceable as a unit.
I had the same problem with my 2000 TJ and I think it's the same control unit part.
More importantly, you need a new blower motor. Your problem is a common issue with 97+ Jeeps - what happens is the motor draws too much current which leads to melting the resistor connector and controls. If you don't replace the motor the wires will melt again in short order.

Blower motor has been replaced already. I am fixing the aftermath of melted wires.
