Default Fan Question

I know another one I apologize. I've read through numerous threads about over heating etc etc.

I have a 93 xj and it only has an auxiliary fan. I wired it up to a switch so it will run at all times. Did any of the Cherokees not have a clutch fan when they were made or did the guy I bought it from just take it off for some random reason? It drives fine on the road but obviously overheats when I take it off road. Since there is no sign of a clutch fan do I just need the actual fan, the clutch and shroud? or is there other parts I need?

Thanks in advance.

XJs all had clutch fans, and only those with air conditioning had the auxiliary fans. It bolts to a hub or pulley on the front of the water pump, and is supposed to be inside a shroud for efficiency.

I would take a picture to show you what is missing, but my wife is away and has the camera.

The PO of your Jeep may have removed the clutch fan and bought some really expensive electric fan he wanted to keep when he sold the Jeep. The answer is though yes all XJs had a mechanical clutch fan. Just source one out of your nearest junkyard. Good luck finding a shroud. Those things seem to be like gold.

You do need two fans.

For the cost of a shroud, fan, and clutch you could buy another fan identical to your aux fan and install it where the fan shroud goes. The factory on/off temps will work to keep the Jeep cool.

IIRC someone else on this forum has this setup. He put in an extra relay in the underhood relay box and uses the same activation power as the aux fan to activate the relay, actual running power for the fan motor comes off a new source from the battery. Be sure to put a fuse in the circuit between the battery and the relay.

He used some dense foam like round pipe wrap to fill the spaces between the two fans, and between the new fan and the tank. You will also need to pull the studs on your fan pulley and replace them with bolts, to increase the clearance area.

If you search and don't find the thread I'm talking about on the CF forum, it might be on the Cherokee Tech forum. <http://www.cherokeetech.com>

I'm going to do this as soon as I get the money instead of replacing the clutch and finding a shroud.

There are other approaches to an electric fan conversion around, some of which don't work with certain lifts (don't get me lyin' about which ones).

Do more research-- have fun.

Thanks guys, so if I got a real nice aux fan along with my current aux fan that would be enough cooling without having to track down a clutch fan?

I'd recommend finding a XJ mechanical fan as if moves way more air than the efan. On a '98, the stock fan clutch bolts to a idler pulley located between the alternator and the a/c compressor. The fan blade assembly itself bolts to the fan clutch. Only a pulley bolts to the water pump.
