Update:

Well I drove it around a little bit with out a/c and it didn't over heat, and then I fixed the squeak on my serp belt so I could run a/c, and within 20mins it overheated, but no fluid came out, so the rad cap was the leaking problem.. but its still over heating.. any ideas, it doesn't seem like a radiator either.

Because it flowing fine, I opened the drain plug and its all good, and its not leaking since I have my new radiator cap..

thinking maybe its the head gasket? But there's no water in any of the cylinders, or in the oil.

How do u know it flowing coolant well thru ALL of the tubes? Half the tubes could be plugged and coolant will flow thru the rad but not enough heat is being removed to cool the motor. The rad can be changed out by dark this evening.

I didn't read every post, but do you have a fan shroud over your clutch? Mine overheats if I'm driving around town and stopping at lights, and in heavy traffic. I didn't think much about it when I first got my XJ, but I found out my shroud is missing. I'm fine on the highway going 60+. I have an electrical fan I can turn on though when I want to keep it cool.

an easy way to test for a bad head gasket or cracked head allowing exhaust gases into the cooling system is to put a pressure tester on the radiator and run the engine ...if the pressure goes way up you have one or the other problem...this will eliminate those two problems from your list....

I'm wondering the same thing. These radiators are notorious for being partially clogged, sending their owners on a wild goose chase.

.....plus they're so small/short vertically, just loosing 2-3 rows/tubes from the bottom up and efficiency drops 10+%, especially in 110 degree weather. Only a radiator shop can tell a rad's condition/how well it flows.....and that's only after they've removed the tanks from the core. But let's face it, changing the radiator cap is the easiest, so let's try that 1st and do the rad last even when it has been said that the PO sucked at maintenance.

Won't be much longer and the #1 topic will go from overheating to "my heater doesn't work".

It actually doesn't have a shroud.. ill look into that.

Ill def drain the rad but id rather spend the 20$ on a head gasket, then 100+ on the rad. But whatever.
