Default Factory Seatbelt replacement

I’ve got a new project XJ that I scored for a great price. I’m going through the basics before I start doing lift, tires, etc. I need to replace the seatbelts as the mechanisms aren’t working correctly. I don’t really want junkyard parts for this , as I feel the same issue may arise. Quadratec only has them for ‘84-96 and I can’t seem to locate anyone else. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What year XJ you got?

also consider many, in fact way more than most xj's have not had a seatbelt failure, so a junkyard seatbelt maybe just fine and last the life of your XJ. just choose wisely, dont buy one that dont work smoothly, or is soiled, shows signs of damage, or from an XJ that was in a wreck. I have found most seatbelts I have found at wreckers to function well. Id not hesitate to install a good used belt in my rig.

As for a new belt, Id be suspect of reproduction, counterfeit belts if made in red china. Some times new can be worse than used.

My xj is 31 years old, and its belts work just fine.
good luck in your quest.

It’s a 1998. I was planning remove the panels and see what is going on. Maybe a clean and lube of the mechanism will take care of it.

The belt itself collects dirt and all that dirt gets pulled into the mechanism as the belt retracts, and starts to stick. Cleaning the belt is sometimes all it needs, but the mechanism is likely just as dirty. Ive heard some use compressed air to clean them out. Others took them apart. I have not taken one apart myself, but be careful as i have seen the springs inside shoot out and leave a bundled mess when others tried it.

As a follow up to my original post...I sent my rear seatbelts to Safety Restore. Customer service was great, quick turn around and they are in perfect working order. Highly recommended.
