Exhaust Manifold Replacement
Hey just wondering if anyone has some how-to's and/or tips on replacing the manifold on my 98 4.0.
I dont have a lot of mechanical skills, but i guess there is only one way to learn.
If anyone has any tips/pics/write-ups would be awesome! thanks

The intake and exhaust manifolds are held on with the same bolts so the will both come off together. While you have them off take a look at the freeze plugs that are on the side of the block under the manifolds. If they need replacing now would be a good time to do them while they are easier to get to.

There was a thread here yesterday or the day before of a guy that had to replace his manifold and took lots of pics and info on how to change it also. Ill try and find it for you. Have you tried to search around for tips or look in the write up section to see if there was a step by step thread on how to change the manifold?

yes unfortunately you can change the intake without removing the exhaust but not the other way around. But since you'll be taking it off anyway it would be a good time to upgrade to the 99+ intake manifold. I'd suggest grabbing a copy of a Haynes manual or something. If you don`t have a lot of mechanical skills it will be a real test as it can be a pain even knowing what you are doing. Just make sure you tighten the bolts back up in the order and to the torque the manual calls for or you'll get a vacuum leak.

I just got done replacing mine with a APN HEADER. The job isnt too bad, mine is a 1994, i should've taken pics but it was a NOW OR NEVER type deal and i wasnt going to stop every time i got something loose (sorry). I didn't have a manual, i just looked at what could have been an issue and loosened or removed it!! Anyways first i ditched the airbox and intake tube, disconnect the vacuum lines, disconnect any electrical connections from the harness ie fuel injectors, tps, maf, there's like three connectors around the top of the intake, the coolant sensor at the front by the t-stat housing, and your O2 sensor), might not have to, but it made it A-LOT easier on the forearms to disconnect the fuel line bracket and move them aside, thats on the face of the intake manifold (believe its 2 bolts),then i slightly removed the serp belt, unbolted the power steering pump bracket ( you don't have to disconnect the lines) mine was black-2 bolts, and your throttle linkage bracket (3, 10mm) and the series of intake/exhaust manifold bolts. After that, i was able to pull the intake away enough to be able to fish out the exhaust manifold. Make sure uo clean the block side of the head of any build-up, or engine oil prior to installing the new gasket!!! Again, im not saying this is how it should be done, this was just me merely assessing it and going after it, start to finish and a couple phone calls, plus a slight a.d.d., 2.5 hrs and i was done!!!

thats what im talkin about thats good **** lol... not judging but you dont need the gasket spray all manifold gaskets are multi layer gaskets and when you torque your bolts on it smashes the lead into the minor holes or pits that develop from heat or other things.... just make sure you scape the old gasket residue off the block and the manifold surfaces, try not to mar them though just make sure they are some what shiny....
