Question Everyrhing seems fine, BUT IT WONT CRANK!

So I went to start my Jeep this morning before work and when I.went to turn it over the starter didn't turn over. I had this problem before and I thought I fixed it by pushing in the fuses so I did that. It did the same thing. I could hear what I think is fuel being put in the engine when I turn the key over. My gagues are good. My battery is fine. The wires to my starter are good. But it seems like the starter isn't even getting power since there is no clicking. It sat for 2 days until I crank it up and drive home last night. Any ideas? Anything will be greatly appreciated

My first guess would be the Neutral Safety Switch.

They're bad about going out.

Try starting it in Neutral or wiggling the shifter around (Push the button in and move it around a good bit in Drive or Neutral) while trying to start it.

If that works then proceed to this:

http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm

OR, in a bind, there's also instructions on how to temporarily bypass the NSS.

Yup, neutral safety switch is suspect #1.

Here is a link to another article on "refurbishing" it.

Well I just took the NSS off and opened it up and its as clean as a whistle. Do those things just go bad or could there be something else wrong? I would like to properly diagnose the problem before I spend the money on a new NSS. Any thoughts would help. P.S. switching the shorter back and forth didn't help while trying to crank it.

Read down the link I post and bypass the NSS just to see if you can start it.

Also, if you'd like to rule out the starter you would MAKE SURE IT'S IN PARK, climb underneath and short the starter solenoid with a screwdriver (If you're not comfortable with this, don't do it.) If that makes it start then it's not the starter and it has to be something between the starter and the ignition switch...

Starter relay?

PS: I can't believe you got the NSS off that easily. They're usually a *****.

I'd start with temporarily bypassing the NSS via the instructions in the link.

Some good advice. Bypass NSS to be absolutely sure it hasn't failed; no matter how it looks. Looks can be deceiving.

Also swap starter relay (in power distribution center under the hood) and smack the starter with a rubber mallet.

Or do like I said and short the starter first before you go beating on things.

I have a little mallet in my center console just for this ^

Doesn't turn or turns real slow like a dead battery if I let it sit too long. Smack the starter housing and it fires right up.

If you have or had a leak on the starter side of the motor then the starter is probably full of poo. I disassembled mine and cleaned it real good with contact cleaner and it was night and day...Until the leak boogered it up again.
