erratic water temp gauge

erratic water temp gauge
I have been experiencing a erratic water temp sender/gauge
I recently noticed that the electrical sender wire harness clip was broken. I bought a replacement at O'Reillys and now I have a issue with the gauge needle/gauge going from normal operating temp at 210* to 260(red zone HOT)
and setting off a CHECK GAUGES light on my dash, to going back to normal in a matter of a few seconds to a few minutes.
My engine runs fine, no other issues.
any suggestions?
thinking of just replacing sender $20.00
could the ECM be a culprit?
