Engne knocking, what could this be?

Engine: 4.0
The other day my engine randomly started knocking. Not sure what it could be but sounds like rod knocking to me. What do y'all think? Flex plate maybe? Sometimes it's there, sometimes it goes away for a little while. Sometimes loud, sometimes quiet. The engine whether warm or cold doesn't seem to make a difference.
