Hey everyone. I was trying to search for engine year compatibility’s and I had no luck. I have a 99 4.0. What engine year would I be able to replace with, with no mods or anything extra. If someone can find the forum for this already started that would be very helpful. Thank you guys/girls!!

thank you very much. That’s exactly what I needed. Motor has 365xxx miles. She’s due to be replaced. Prolly cheaper then rebuilding it and less time consuming

 

Rebuilding a Jeep 4.0 is easy.
You won't regret it.

 

the good thing about obtaining a spare motor before your old one dies is you can take your time to select a known good one, haggle over price, have it ready to go, that way the swap can be accomplished in a weekend, and you can then store the old motor for a strip down, and accquire parts on special for a rebuild.

If you want to keep an older vehicle for a long time, as a daily driver, having good spares is vital

I have a complete runner, 59 vins of my DD as a test bed, got it very cheap..I also bought a complete driveline of a local fellow for a couple hundred $...save disabling my running spare

 

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks DO NOT interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.


XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)
