Default Engine swap and temp sensor(s)?

Greetings jeepers. Nice to be on your site as a subscriber now. Have drawn some water from your wells recently and am grateful for the knowledge base. As my username shows I have a mixed breed frankenwrangokee. Knowing less than I should have at the outset I found a 2k/xj long block and rebuilt to put in my 91 wrangler. Am almost done with swap except for some vacuum lines rerouting and fitting mods for the 2k intake vs the 91.

My issue is with the deletion of the temp indicator sensor location. the 91 4.0 has the indicator sensor next to the grounding strap head bolt next to the firewall.. I understand the 2000 xj 4.0 has the indicator sensor feed combined with the t-stat sensor. That being the case and hopefully Not having to change the wiring harness is it possible to run a longer indicator feed to the t-stat and splice into the 91 2-wire from that sending unit ? The wire colors are same at each end of the fuel rail/injector harness. Hate to jury rig it but if it will send to the temp gauge I'm okay with it. Can get an aftermarket temp gauge but would prefer to keep stock dash and cluster. Does anyone have any thoughts or recs ? Please don't say wiring harness! Lol. Am liking the fact that this motor bumps the h.p. up over my 91 thanks to the 2k cam and intake. Thanks yall. BTW this is a great site!

On the 91 you have 2 temp sensors 1 is for the temp gauge and the 2nd one is for the computer , and no you can not hook the two wiring together . you will have to find a way to add in the temp sensor to a hose some where .

You can always carefully drill and tap a hole at the back of the head around same area the sender is located on the old head, buy a sender and install it. Plenty of people have done that.

thanks very much for the recs on my temp sensor mod. Probably about same time as your message I was finding that on the 2000 Cherokee 4.0 block the rear port for the temp gauge sensor as in the 91 is deleted and the sensor for the ecu in the thermo housing sends to gauge. I decided to go with a ford 5/8" coupling in line of the heater return hose for a correct temp read , and splice into the gauge sensor wire to extend the cap to the heater hose coupling . Considered using a block drain plug location for the sensor but it's an acess issue being uner the exhaust manifold so better to put on top of motor I think. The coupling I found is a good quality heavy alum. one with a center block tapped to receive the 1/8"nptf sensor thread and it pre-tapped for a grounding screw...a great and simple solution and easy to access. Again many thanks for the helpful suggestions. Should have "Franken" back otr in a week or so. Fingers crossed!
