Default Engine swap

Have a 98 xj 4.0 5 speed manual 4x4. I have a friend that has I rebuild 96 4.0 short block with 0 miles on it since the rebuild. He has all the paper work from the shop. My question is it don't have a head so can I put my head on it and put it in my 98?

Yes. It's just a short block. Use the 1998's sensors. Use could use a 1987 if you wanted, most of the changes over the years were in the head.

What's wrong with your `98 that you want to go to all this trouble? A maintained 4.0 is good for 200K+ miles.

It's been well taken care of since I have got it but I got a slight lower end knock. It has almost 300k on it and I want to have a motor ready for when this one dies. I'm not going to swap it out yet I'm going to wait till this one is done.
