I have a 97 xj with 4.0 all stock powertrain except cold air intake. Once the vehicle warms up to temp it will shut off or try to die. Especially if going through town and its bumpy. If it dies the gauges go crazy and fuel gauge wont work for the rest of the day. Also if it dies it starts right back up and sounds fine and all gauges work except for gas. I am wanting to get this fixed before I put on the lift I have sitting in the garage for it. Any help would be great

 

It sounds like your Crankshaft Position Sensor is on its way out.

How old is the one currently installed?

Do you have a CHECK ENGINE light on? Does the bulb work - Turn key to RUN before starting engine, the message should illuminate.

 

The engine light is one when key is on but not running and I have never replaced it.

 

Have you had it checked to see if there are any codes? Just because you don't have a CEL doesn't mean you don't have any stored codes.
