I'm looking at replacing the engine in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport. The Jeep has a 4.0L engine with 116 k on the clock. I'm trying to find the least expensive way to go. Where can I find a good deal on engines? Ideas?

 

Why does it need to be replaced? Best would be a junkyard, or craiglist or local 4x4s that are parting out vehicles and swap the motor in yourself.

Check out car-parts.com to search some junkyards around you.

 

When I replaced the engine in our '97 last year, I used car-part.com. I ended up finding an 80,000 mile engine less than 2 hours away for $450. Great find and it works just great, especially after I freshened it up on the engine stand pre install. Otherwise, you're looking at close to $2000 for a rebuilt like a Jasper.

FYI, this is what I did to freshen the used motor. I'd recommend doing this to get maximum value from all the work and saving issues down the road.

• New water pump
• New injectors & o rings
• Complete tune up
• New gaskets
• Fresh oil & filter
• Good time to check rear main seal
• Clean engine now. Easier

Replace your motor mounts after pulling the old motor.
