engine light stays on

i have a 99 cherokee there are no codes that come up on the scan tool and the light keeps coming on any ideas what it could be

what scan tool are you using? if its a autozone special, it wont read all the manufacture only codes. Like BXXXX or UXXXX, just generic PXXXX codes that are for emissions

maybe the software is outdated? I dont know if mac scan tools require updates, I dont have a Mac dealer that visits my work,... I'll look more into it at work monday. See if i can find anything about the light being on without a code being set.
