I have a 98 XJ 4.0L that's developed a knock over the last couple months. I have used a stethoscope and pretty much narrowed it down to the #1 cylinder. Here's how I know, put the stethoscope up to the water pump and can hear it pretty good. Also right below the head near the cylinder, same. Took the belt off and ran it, still heard the knock. Took off the #1 cylinder spark plug wire. The knock subsides. It's still faintly there. But not as loud. Did the same to the #2 and could still hear it very well. The knock is pretty loud when the engine is cold and gets quieter when it warms up. If I rev it up to say 2k rpm. It sort of goes away. Jeep idles and runs like there are no issues. Couple of questions now.
Is there anything else I can do to diagnose it?
Who has had these exact symptoms?
What did you do to fix it?
If you swapped motors, what was the overall cost?

Sounds like a rod knock since it makes more noise under load when that cylinder fires
