Engine Knock
Probably going to get scolded on this topic but I'm going to ask anyway.
I have a 96 xj mileage not entirely sure (probably around 100k) But I have an engine knock that seems to go away slightly as the engine gets hot (but still present). It had went away slightly for a week or two, but now it is back and starting to sound worse.
On the bad sounding scale its at a 5.5 out of ten. So not too bad.
I really want to take care of this before it gets out of hand. Can anyone help me figure out how to diagnose an engine knock? I am a novice at working on my XJ. I have read a little bit on engine knocks but I have no clue where to even start. Any help would be awesome. Thanks Guys!

take a steel pipe/bat/post and put it up to the engine in various places. come back and tell us where its at.
If it goes away with heat, my guess is piston slap... but thats a shot in the dark. all 3 of my jeeps have it. (202k, 180k and 130k)

Well alright then!!! Auto Zone and other parts stores (Harbor Freight) sell a diagnostic stethoscope that is really handy for tracking down unsettling noises in the engine compartment while the engine is running.
Obviously extreme caution is suggested so you don't get your necktie, hair or other articles of clothing/jewelry caught in the moving parts. A trip to the mechanic would look really good after that experience.
If you suspect bearing failure: Remove and inspect the oil filter. You will need to purchase an oil filter inspection kit. It contains a tool for cutting open the can and a knife for cutting the filter material from the filter housing. Open up the folds and check for excessive metal pieces.
