Engine got hot and shut off . . . what should I look for?
Hello,
I was towing a trailer up American Fork Canyon in Utah. And my engine started to get really hot and shut off at the very top in the best case scenario right by an unoccupied turn out (I just had to winch my XJ three feet to get completely in). I went for a 3-4 hour hike, came back and it started fine. I took my XJ (without the trailer) on a two hour trail run. Then parked it overnight. I hiked Timp the next day and drove back to SLC with the trailer just fine (had the heater on in 90 deg weather just to be safe). Since then I have sold the trailer. And will never tow up any pass again. I want to keep my XJ for as long as I can. I recently replaced the entire cooling system and installed a trans cooler.
My question is: How do I know if my engine was damaged? Are there signs I should look for?
Since then, I have started it up a couple of times and it seems to run fine, no knocking or weird noises.
Thanks!

That is a good idea. I am due for one soon anyways. Thanks for the advice.
