engine dying
I have a 1997 Cherokee that just recently started dying while I'm driving. At first I thought it was out of gas, but driving home from the gas station it died two more times. I started it today and let it idle for about ten minutes and it sounded fine, but when I drove it it died when I got to the stop light at the end of my street, and then again before I got it home. My gas gauge also has acted strange for a while too, sometimes it will say there's a quarter tank of gas, then I start it up again and the needle won't even move and vice versa. Maybe they're related?

welcome to CF. And i hate to guess what could be wrong with your Jeep. But it sounds like it could be the fuel pump or fuel pump relays. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be here to help you out. good luck with it. hope its not too costly to fix.

my 98 did the same thing it would idle great go to move it would buck and miss ,gas gauge would be all over the place .I started with the back to check the wiring ,plugs relays.etc a mechainc printed off the wiring diagram we started to trace wires and joints lastly I pulled every fuse (one at a time)to check for a bad connection . now the problem is gone, we think it was it fuse panel on the right side kick panel ( I like mud puddles and hit them at mach 5 or drive into water deep enough to to get inches of water on the inside) dirty connections are possible so after about six hours of checking stuff to have the issuse just go away CHECK your fuses first then a test drive still could be fuel pump issuses but fuses are easier to check .hope is helps

You may want to check out the speed sensor located on the trans. It's wired into the ignition system and if it's faulty the engine will die (lose fire) once it reaches 180 degrees and 1900 rpm. It'll crank back and run fine once it cools down below 180 until you exceed both of those again.... Just a thought. I had a similar problem that took me many hours following wiring schematics till I found the bad speed sensor.
