1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ, 4.0L 242 I6, 374,000 miles

Last week engine died on the way to work. Towed it to Precision Tune. No codes. They diagnosed bad ignition coil and bad pickup coil. Had them replace ($435) and it ran fine until yesterday.

While idling in a parking lot and engine temp indicated over 210F but not near the red, it coughed, sputtered and died. Very similar to before ignition coil was replaced, except engine was hotter. Had it towed back to the shop that did the work.

Is there a ground from the harnesses to pickup coil or ignition coil that goes bad and needs to be cleaned up? Anything like that?

What other issues could this be?

Thanks in advance.

If it was that hot, maybe you had a fuel line vapor lock. Is your 96 old school fuel regulator on the rail or new school ...in the pump assy

I've examined and repaired that before. I have everything attached to a grounding strap, and the strap attached to the dipstick tube stud to cut down on work hardening of the wires. Didn't think to look at it.

In the electric pump assembly I think. I've never experienced vapor lock before on it, and the fuel line runs driver's side, exhaust passenger side.

maybe the strap isn't enough for everything attached..he does suggest changing the strap on the firewall to a 4 awg ... I like bluejeep's suggestion, too.. vapor lock sucks..

That strap has been on there for 12 years and it is plenty more gauge than everything attached to it.

2 years ago about, and used some of the fancy CHAMPION 9034 Iridium plugs and ACDELCO 16806G wires, cap and rotor.

Now how about something to do with the ignition coil, since when that was replaced it ran for almost a week until coolant got just over 215F.

that would be something I would border harass where you had it done.. i see a ton of posts on here that even if its new its not always good and mopar parts are best.. test it. cruiser has https://cruiser54.com/?p=41
the distributor plugs into the coil.. the camshaft sensor/pickup coil is in the distributor, that could be bad too. your code is saying something is wrong with plug and wire 1.. maybe they screwed up your cap.
check to make sure everything is plugged in all the way. the center plug on the cap goes to the coil.

And precision tune thought a new crank position sensor was the cure.
they pulled the one I installed in October, I took it to oreillyauto.com and replaced under lifetime warranty.
still dies right above operating temperature around 215ish

I suspect the stored P0351 code was from when they checked the coil last week. One method I read was pulling a plug wire to check for spark.
