Default Engine cranks but no start

I got a 2000 Cherokee that I bought with a bad engine... or so HE thought

The piston exploded and exterminated the end of the spark plug.
Head was still in good shape and the sleeve had minor scaring.

I honed out the sleeve and you could never tell there was an issue. dropped in a piston, new gaskets blah blah blah blah

Well the engine was never out of the jeep. Only the head, intake, valve cover, exhuast mani and intake mani where removed by him... along with Pan and pieces of the piston removed by ME

All is together and it cranks and sparks GREAT.
Air, check
Fuel, check
Spark, check

So than the issue is compression/timing. 5/6 of pistons are perfect and the 1 I did is not far off.

The cam positioning sensor was never removed. the bolts are still covered in jeep grim.

I went threw the rockers/lifters/valves/springs and the rods are tight.

So somehow the timing is off, yes?

The engine has 147k and its been very well maintained. but water doesn't like to be combusted .

Any ideas? If you have thought behind your theory, please share.

Thanks again, Adam.

****ty compression in every piston.

It makes me think the trimming chain slipped/jumped/stretched.

any thoughts anyone?

i have seen a track record on xj's that sit for a while. How long have you been working on it? A few weeks, month, several months? I have noticed if they sit for a while, the C.P.S. goes out on them. Might be worth looking at.

2-3 weeks max.

I thought a bad CPS wouldn't give you spark?
either way, I tested it and its good. First thing I checked.

Thanks for the help

I have seen where the 00-01 can need the camshaft position sensor indexed. A toothpick is used. I've never done it, but I would look into this.

Here is a thread you should check out on this.
