I have a '85 Cherokee.
Under the hood the stickers say that it is a:
2.5
4 cylinder
Carb.
I have a Chilton manual for Jeeps from '84 - '98
It has absolutely nothing for a Carbed '85 for engine specs.
The manual just says that it is throttle bodied.
I myself have not changed the engine and I'm highly doubtful that the previous owner even knew how to fix anything. More like half *** (pardon) what ever he touches.
When I decode the the VIN number it also doesn't make sense.
it barely matches up to the specs of any '85 model.
What I was hopping is if you guys have any input that would clarify the unresponsive book.
Thank You.
Mikel.

This is also true. It is throttle body injected (TBI). So it's a carb that looks like a throttle body, and a throttle body that acts like a carb.
(really sucked)

I thought "P90X" was getting into the Jeep biz: "it's all about the Engine Confusion"!!

Remove the air cleaner lid, and take a picture of the carburettor/throttle body so we can help you sort it out.
The first 150ci I4 engines had a 1V Carter (as mentioned,) they briefly had the 1V TBI (Carter again, I think,) and rapidly went to the MPFI after that. I think 1984-1985 was an immediate 'break' year, so it would be helpful to see what you've got.
The 150ci came out for the 1984 model year. I think it got TBI for 1986, and MPFI for somewhere around 1988 - but don't hold me to it (I'm not looking in my notebook right now...)

I'm not quite sure how to interpret the sticker... Shouldn't it say XJ???

And here is the sticker Specs.

Looks like a carb with a electric choke to me. Looks like the left side if the picture the fuel line is running into a fuel bowl. I see idle screws and u can see the jet in the bottom of the carb. There would be wires running to fuel injector if it was throttle body.

1V carburettor with electric choke (big black round dingus to the right) and a dashpot (little yellowish flying saucer in foreground.) TBI setups have neither of those - so it's a dead giveaway that it's a carb.
Also, the fact that it sez "CARB" in the middle of the vacuum diagram is a bit of a pointer...
As far as the "ZJ" up top - no idea. I'd think it would say "XJ" (there was a later "X1" designation for "fleet models" - rubber matting in place of carpet, power nothing, et al,) but ZJ may have been an in-house AMC desi for something-or-other. I just haven't had an opportunity to chew through old AMC records yet...
